From Library Journal
Since drug use has occurred throughout history and within most cultures, the authors in this updated edition of their original work ( LJ 3/15/83) believe that "education based on truthful information is the only solution to the drug problem." In straightforward language, Weil and Rosen distinguish between drug use and drug abuse and stress the importance of developing a "good relationship" with drugs. Because the authors do not condemn drug use (legal or illegal), their volume may be considered unorthodox by some. Each chapter deals with a specific class of drugs, such as stimulants, depressants, and psychedelics, and describes the different effects of drugs in each category. At the end of each chapter are some precautions for using those drugs and also suggested readings for more information. Aimed at young people and their parents and teachers, this book offers an alternative way of looking at drug use. Recommended for public libraries.

Review
No one can argue that our society likes altered states of consciousness-even if it's just a chocolate rush from a candy bar. This book is a fascinating primer and history on mind-altering substances. It doesn't advocate or judge; it just presents the risks and benefits, non-hysterically, on the substances floating around out there today, from magic mushrooms to marijuana to cold remedies. Very few of us are truly "drug free," so you might want to get the scoop on what's going in before you ingest it. -- From The WomanSource Catalog & Review: Tools for Connecting the Community for Women; review by Ilene Rosoff

Drugs are. Objectivity should guide policy. But more on addiction please
By MacLeod
I will preface this review with the following relevant information: I am a U.S. citizen, having a Master's Degree in Clinical Addiction Counseling as well as one who has survived Addiction's deadly grip. As such I have a far more extensive and intimate awareness of the ideas and material covered in this text.
So for me, the most significant aspect is that the authors have written this text with the objectivity that should have been and should be the basis for social policy and legislation regarding the inevitable and immutable use of psychoactive substances. And prove the absolute veracity of the perspective that drugs are inherently neither bad nor good. These labels are the result of social forces which are entirely subjective and result from bias. Their objective details about a breadth of legal and illegal drugs of use and abuse that various members of society may choose to ingest make clear that bias and misinformation is what has led us to wage an unwinnable war. A war on drugs that has led to more social damage than all illegal drug use in the history of this country. AND emphasizes that addiction to nicotine is MORE difficult to resolve than addiction to heroin and meth; alcohol addiction more so than cocaine and THE MOST biologically harmful and deadliest psychoactive substance, yet is still legal.
But the authors must include more up to date on thatthe nature of addiction. While they come close when did discussing alcoholism, the authors fail to place enough emphasis on the fact that while use may be a choice, if one is of the small unlucky minority to become truly addicted to any psychoactive drug, use is then no longer a choice. For an addict, use of a substance is as necessary to their survival as air, food and water is to every human being. Well designed treatment works. Law enforcement, the courts and penal institutions serve only to compound the problem and allow people with an illness to die unnecessarily.

The single best book on mind altering drugs
By A Customer
This book covers almost all the information you could want toknow about mind-altering substances. It includes a history of drugsand drug use. It has user reports, lists side effects, has precautions for would-be users, and offers advice as to the safety of various drugs. There is a section all about WHY people use drugs, as well as suggestions for a sane domestic policy regarding drug use. Dr. Andrew Weil is probably the most respected proponent of homeopathic medicine in the USA. His insights are detailed and while he has a certain political bias in regards to drugs, his advice comes from his extensive experience as a Medical Doctor. I'd give this one an extra star if it were an option. If you're seeking useful info about drugs that is not clouded by anti-drug propoganda or pro-drug mania, then this is the book you need.

While not perfect, should be required reading
By Troy Edwards
Once you find out you were lied to about how dangerous something was, you start to question how dangerous other drugs are. Who do you rely on for such information? An internet forum is not a good place to your trust in, if your health is on the line.
This book gives you a much better idea of what is reasonably safe (or even perfectly safe), vs what the hell to stay away from.
One point I found brilliantly stated, was how a drug is perceived is based far more on the culture/crowd it is associated with, than by its actual potential for harm/dependency.
Also, it becomes very clear that many of the regularly prescribed drugs are far more dangerous than some of the schedule 1 drugs!?
