This inspirational story is a wonderful window onto the life of a trauma surgeon, in this case the celebrated doctor who treated U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords after she was shot in Tucson, Arizona. It helps that Rhee, a retired U.S. Navy captain who is chief of trauma, critical care, burns, and emergency surgery at the University of Arizona, teamed up with veteran journalist Dillow. They mix good first-person storytelling with medical facts and an understandably pro gun-control message. Rhee, born in South Korea, notes that his native country regulates private gun ownership and, as a result, each year typically boasts just 10 gun-related incidents leading to death or injury, rather than hundreds or thousands. There is some alphabet soup here: it takes awhile before readers learn that “GSW’s” stands for gunshot wounds. But Rhee comes across as admirable and likable, thanking his wife and two kids “for learning to eat dinner between 9 and 10 p.m.” and for understanding that though he “missed many Christmases and birthdays, it was always for the right reasons.” Heartwarming and eye-opening. --Karen Springen

A GREAT read for everyone!

This was simply fascinating in every regard, from page one to the end. Both my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the book, which made us feel as though we were with Dr. Rhee in his development, in his travels, in his military service, and at present. The book moves chronologically through his career, but is organized in such a way that the reader can't stop at the end of a chapter. Frankly, I'm glad it was a rainy weekend. This is not the typical autobiography in any way. Rather, his candid description of every scenario makes us feel as though we are in his mind, listening to the pros and cons of his decisions, many of which determined whether patients would survive or die. Dr. Rhee is an American hero.

Dr. Peter Rhee is best known as the head of the trauma team at the University of Arizona Medical Center (UAMC) who saved the life of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords on Jan. 8, 2011. Giffords survived an assassin's bullet that traveled through one side of her brain. Six people were killed and 14 endured non-fatal, but life-changing, injuries during the worst mass murder in the history of Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Rhee built the trauma unit at UAMC, and on Jan. 8, 2011, he knew the team was completely prepared for anything that came through their doors that day because it was just another "day at the office," as he often refers to his job. While outsiders see what looks like total chaos, an incoming trauma enters a well-organized machine, a team where each one knows his or her precise job at that moment. His words better informed me about what goes on in a surgeon’s head and heart. I am, therefore, more trusting of what happens in an Emergency or Operating Room.
While Dr. Rhee is not an author by profession, his voice and no B.S. personality comes through loud and clear in his recollections of his life so far. He spent over 20 years in the US Navy and part of his life growing up in Africa. I truly enjoyed this book -- a fast read because it's more exciting than an action movie -- and recommend it highly to anyone considering a medical career because he demonstrates the type of personality it takes, as well as the perseverance and drive, to work in an ER or OR. If you like true life drama or great non-fiction, this book is for you. I also recommend it to anyone who has ever survived a medical trauma and most especially to the residents of Arizona.
Dr. Rhee does not make overt political statements for or against gun-control. He simply shows us the result of a deliberate gunshot wound and how one act rippled through a congresswoman, a community, and our nation. I would call Dr. Rhee a patriot of the finest kind because he served our country in a foreign war zone and he and his team continue to save lives every day. He does not seek glory or notoriety. He’s just working another “day at the office.”

A MUST Read for Everyone!

Dr. Rhee became a familiar face around the country and the world after his work during the horrific tragedy on January 8th, 2011 when Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s, her team and local citizens lives were changed forever. He gives an overview of the events that occurred that day and how he and his team did their normal everyday job that day to save lives. He explains the trials and tribulations that he was faced with growing up as a child, moving around the world, to finally ending up here in the US.
He shares how he was influenced to become a Trauma Surgeon and the dedication and sacrifices he is faced with every day just to continue doing what he loves to do. Dr. Rhee along with his entire Trauma Team are truly assets to our Tucson community and it is important that everyone knows that. Dr. Rhee does a good job at defining the importance of having a Level 1 Trauma Center, being that UAMC is the only one in Southern Arizona. Definitely a great book for everyone to read, I enjoyed it and could not put it down!
I highly recommend this book to everyone!
