About the Author

Albert J. Saganich, Jr. holds both master's and bachelor's degrees in computer science and mathematics and has been in the computer industry for more than 18 years designing, developing, and supporting enterprise-level applications and services. Al consults for such companies as Thomson Financial, Fidelity, Compaq, and Digital. In 1999 Al joined BEA's Education Division, where he works as a Principal Technologist/Architect providing mentoring, design, development, and other education services. Al is an accomplished writer and has published a number of works on Java, XML, and J2EE. Al speaks frequently on WebLogic Server and J2EE-related technologies. In his spare time, Al teaches Pai Lum Kung Fu and rides dirtbikes with his wife and children.

Tom Hardy has more than five years of experience designing and developing applications using BEA WebLogic Platform, specifically BEA WebLogic Server and BEA WebLogic Portal. In addition, he has taught courses for BEA on all parts of BEA WebLogic Platform, including development and administration courses. Tom has delivered lectures at EWorld pertaining to the WebLogic Portal product. Tom has a master's degree in computer science with a concentration in software development. Tom is an avid baseball fan and a Boston Red Sox season ticket holder.

Lawrence H. Kaye has more than 10 years of experience designing and developing enterprise applications for commercial and federal government agencies. Lawrence is the Senior Manager of Education Infrastructure at BEA Systems and has helped design, build, and market several dozen courses for BEA WebLogic Platform. He has taught courses on BEA WebLogic Server development and administration and BEA WebLogic Integration and written articles for WebLogic Developer's Journal and dev2dev Web site. Lawrence is a certified rocket scientist, holding bachelor's and master's degrees in aerospace engineering.

Sunila Srivatsan has played multiple pivotal roles in her 11 years in the information technology industry. Her credits include technical and strategic interface with various institutions, including dozens of Fortune 500 companies, U.S. and foreign government agencies, and international clients. Her professional charters have included project architecture, design, and development; life cycle management; education delivery; technical courseware development; and technical prospecting. Since 2000, Sunila's technical delivery for BEA education services has spanned all products of BEA. Her vast technical repertoire and ability to resolve client issues in their best interests has consistently endeared her to clients. Over several years, Sunila has presented technical papers at EWorld and JavaOne conferences in a variety of areas. Sunila earned her B.S. in mathematics (1992) and postgraduate qualifications in computer science. She also holds a law degree and is admitted to the legal bar in India.

Pass this one up...BEA's documentation is better

A thin book with very little practical value. You can consider this a "Cliff Note" version of Weblogic Workshop: it offers a nice summary devoid of any useful detail. For example, Weblogic's most powerful framework feature, Java Custom Control development, is mentioned in a mere one and a half pages.
Programmers buy technical books in order to understand behind the scenes MECHANISMS and to learn full cycle IMPLEMENTATION procedures. You are better off with the BEA Weblogic documentation. In fact, it is getting all too common among writers to simply paraphrase or summarize existing FREE documentation in their books, publish them and slap a ridiculous price tag on them. Where's the value-added content? The technical insight? Hmmm....not in this book!
If this book was offered for free, I would still hesitate to pay the shipping cost.

A Good Start, but Incomplete

The book says that this book is for Beginner to Intermediate". I know some about J2EE, mostly Apache, but very little about WebLogic.
I found that lack of knowledge frustrating in getting some of the examples to run correctly. They may work correctly, but it was beyond my capabilities to get them to run.
An introductory chapter on WebLogic Server would have been very helpful. If you don't know WLS, you may want to get a book on that before tackling Workshop with this book.
I wouldn't go so far as to say "Don't Buy This Book", but just understand what it is and what it isn't.

Very shallow

DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!
The book contains nothing, you won't find in the Workshop Help. Furthermore it's poorly written, and I suspect the authors don't know what they are talking about. The Workshop Help is a lot easier to understand, and contains everything this book contains, plus a LOT more.
The fact that this is the only book on the WL Workshop is a shame - as the IDE is really cool. Especially Workshop will speed up your J2EE-development speed SIGNIFICANTLY.
Conclusion: Really great topic covered by really lousy writers.

This inspirational story is a wonderful window onto the life of a trauma surgeon, in this case the celebrated doctor who treated U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords after she was shot in Tucson, Arizona. It helps that Rhee, a retired U.S. Navy captain who is chief of trauma, critical care, burns, and emergency surgery at the University of Arizona, teamed up with veteran journalist Dillow. They mix good first-person storytelling with medical facts and an understandably pro gun-control message. Rhee, born in South Korea, notes that his native country regulates private gun ownership and, as a result, each year typically boasts just 10 gun-related incidents leading to death or injury, rather than hundreds or thousands. There is some alphabet soup here: it takes awhile before readers learn that “GSW’s” stands for gunshot wounds. But Rhee comes across as admirable and likable, thanking his wife and two kids “for learning to eat dinner between 9 and 10 p.m.” and for understanding that though he “missed many Christmases and birthdays, it was always for the right reasons.” Heartwarming and eye-opening. --Karen Springen

A GREAT read for everyone!

This was simply fascinating in every regard, from page one to the end. Both my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the book, which made us feel as though we were with Dr. Rhee in his development, in his travels, in his military service, and at present. The book moves chronologically through his career, but is organized in such a way that the reader can't stop at the end of a chapter. Frankly, I'm glad it was a rainy weekend. This is not the typical autobiography in any way. Rather, his candid description of every scenario makes us feel as though we are in his mind, listening to the pros and cons of his decisions, many of which determined whether patients would survive or die. Dr. Rhee is an American hero.

Well written adrenaline rush. Insider’s view of a top trauma unit. A must read for anyone going to medical or nursing school.

Dr. Peter Rhee is best known as the head of the trauma team at the University of Arizona Medical Center (UAMC) who saved the life of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords on Jan. 8, 2011. Giffords survived an assassin's bullet that traveled through one side of her brain. Six people were killed and 14 endured non-fatal, but life-changing, injuries during the worst mass murder in the history of Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Rhee built the trauma unit at UAMC, and on Jan. 8, 2011, he knew the team was completely prepared for anything that came through their doors that day because it was just another "day at the office," as he often refers to his job. While outsiders see what looks like total chaos, an incoming trauma enters a well-organized machine, a team where each one knows his or her precise job at that moment. His words better informed me about what goes on in a surgeon’s head and heart. I am, therefore, more trusting of what happens in an Emergency or Operating Room.

While Dr. Rhee is not an author by profession, his voice and no B.S. personality comes through loud and clear in his recollections of his life so far. He spent over 20 years in the US Navy and part of his life growing up in Africa. I truly enjoyed this book -- a fast read because it's more exciting than an action movie -- and recommend it highly to anyone considering a medical career because he demonstrates the type of personality it takes, as well as the perseverance and drive, to work in an ER or OR. If you like true life drama or great non-fiction, this book is for you. I also recommend it to anyone who has ever survived a medical trauma and most especially to the residents of Arizona.

Dr. Rhee does not make overt political statements for or against gun-control. He simply shows us the result of a deliberate gunshot wound and how one act rippled through a congresswoman, a community, and our nation. I would call Dr. Rhee a patriot of the finest kind because he served our country in a foreign war zone and he and his team continue to save lives every day. He does not seek glory or notoriety. He’s just working another “day at the office.”

A MUST Read for Everyone!

Dr. Rhee became a familiar face around the country and the world after his work during the horrific tragedy on January 8th, 2011 when Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s, her team and local citizens lives were changed forever. He gives an overview of the events that occurred that day and how he and his team did their normal everyday job that day to save lives. He explains the trials and tribulations that he was faced with growing up as a child, moving around the world, to finally ending up here in the US.

He shares how he was influenced to become a Trauma Surgeon and the dedication and sacrifices he is faced with every day just to continue doing what he loves to do. Dr. Rhee along with his entire Trauma Team are truly assets to our Tucson community and it is important that everyone knows that. Dr. Rhee does a good job at defining the importance of having a Level 1 Trauma Center, being that UAMC is the only one in Southern Arizona. Definitely a great book for everyone to read, I enjoyed it and could not put it down!
I highly recommend this book to everyone!

Seemed simplistic but proved tremendously valuable

This was a required course in my Research Methods class for my MA in Mental Health Counseling. When I first received it I thought: "Are you joking me! I just paid a fortune for this?" But, working through the exercises really sharpened by ability to scan research articles in my field & separate quality research from poor research. It also prepared me to write up my own research. I have referred to it several times since completing the course--and I cannot say that about too many of my textbooks. So, yes, painfully expensive, but worthwhile.

A handy guide for researchers and writers

I was required to buy the Fifth Edition (2013) of Fred Pyrczak’s book Evaluating Research in Academic Journals for a master’s level course in library and information science. Most college students have some familiarity with searching for articles in academic journals, but many don’t have a clue about how to assess the accuracy, validity, or reliability of those articles. Pyrczak’s book provides some good instruction on how to go about this content appraisal process. The book consists of a series of checklists for evaluating different parts of an article: titles, abstracts, introductions and literature reviews, analysis and results sections, etc. Each checklist is a series of questions supplemented by Pyrczak’s explanatory comments and examples pulled from real articles, mostly in the field of psychology. In design and writing style it has the feel of a workbook. Each chapter ends with a brief series of exercises for self testing.

This book will serve as a helpful guide not only for assessing other scholars’ articles but also for writing your own. A lot of what Pyrczak has to say is just common sense, but even so it’s helpful to have the criteria for good academic writing spelled out for you in a straightforward fashion. When writing a paper or article, this book provides a helpful reminder of what and what not to do—almost like a cheat sheet, but more elaborate.

The workbook format gets annoying after a while, because there’s a fair amount of redundancy in the text. Each example is introduced twice, once in the paragraph that precedes it and then again in a heading that says the exact same thing. An evaluation scale from 1 to 5 placed after each question is unnecessary (as if you’re only going to use the book once, for one article). The book is bigger and longer than it needs to be. Rather than an 8.5" x 11" book of 162 pages, it probably could have been edited and designed down to a 100 page pocket guide. Perhaps a smaller size could translate into a lower price. Though it’s a useful book, the big type, loose layout, and excessive repetition do make you wonder if it’s worth what you paid for it.
