Page-turning action and excitement

Agent X might have the perfect thriller combination of enough action to keep you up late reading when you should be asleep without being scary enough to keep you awake at night. Reading it is like watching an action movie where the good guys pull off completely unrealistic stunts without getting themselves shot or blown up and you know it's not real but you love it anyway.

That's a long-winded way of saying this is not an FBI procedural mystery. You have to suspend your sense of disbelief to fully enjoy this book. You'll miss all the fun if you fuss about whether anyone could figure out the clues that fast or escape unharmed from the ambush.

This is the second novel featuring The Bricklayer Steve Vail. This book starts not long after the end of the first book, but the story stands alone so it isn't absolutely necessary to have read the first book before reading this one. I enjoyed the first one too and think you'll want to read it if you haven't already.
Vail is a former FBI agent turned bricklayer. It wasn't repeated in this book but he had been fired for insubordination before the events of the first book. He hates management and likes to do things his own way without interference. This book gets a little deeper into his psyche than the first one, but it's still more about the action than the emotions.

The first book had a lot of physical action and this one, though it has plenty of action, is more about following clues and more teamwork with Bannon and another of Vail`s friends from his FBI days. I thought the book was more interesting with different personalities and relationships for Vail to bounce off and not just do the solo cowboy thing.

There are a few different mysteries going on in the book. Vail has come to DC for a New Years Eve date with Kate Bannon, who was his FBI contact in the first book. But instead of a state dinner, they end up in a missing child case and Vail's actions there, plus something that happens to Kate at the beginning of the book draw him into freelancing for the FBI in an espionage case. In addition, he agrees to help his friend Bursaw look for a missing woman.

The pace of this book was perfect for me. I often get impatient in the middle of books and have to skip ahead to see what's going to happen. With this book, I didn't jump ahead a single page -- and for me that's rare. The end wasn't a surprise but there were plenty of twists and turns throughout to keep me guessing. And it kept my attention enough that I didn't even think about skipping forward.

Update: I was sad to learn the author of this series has died and there will be no more Bricklayer novels. Although it will be no more than a 2 book series (I have not heard of any partially completed manuscripts), these books are definitely worth reading. Just read them with the bittersweet knowledge that you won't get to see how the author develops this intriguing character.

Entertaining And Action-Packed But Seriously Strains Credibility!

In Agent X, the follow up to Boyd's The Bricklayer, superhero Steve Vail is once again called on to save the day when no one else can. Without going into specifics about the plot, Agent X has Vail and his partner-in-crimesolving, FBI AD Kate Bannon, hunting down a sly and lethal Russian spy.

The book's plot will keep you turning the pages at a fast pace, as the story is loaded with action. If action and plot twists are of primary interest to you, you'll probably enjoy Agent X a lot. However, if strong character development and a plot that is highly realistic are of at least equal importance, than you're probably going to find Agent X to be somewhat disappointing. I consider myself in this latter camp. While I enjoyed much of the action, I often found the book went too far in terms of straining my sense of credulity. Similarly, while the characters are serviceable, they are not very "real" people; and the dialogue Boyd has them speak, particularly regarding the bantering between Vail and Bannon, is a bit pedestrian.

Overall, for me, Agent X is a mixed bag of good elements and not so good elements. As such, while I didn't dislike Agent X, I didn't like it enough to recommend highly.

Fantastic book

Steve Vail is the next Jack Reacher. I say that only because I've been searching for another series with a similar character and writing style as Lee Child's Jack Reacher Books as I've read all of them. This book series has the same lone wolf type of character who with smarts and brute force does whatever he has to do, to do the right thing. Even if that means breaking some rules!

The plot is on par with the more complicated and witty of the Reacher series but definitely with a style and story line of characters all it's own. If you read the series of books by Lee Child, Vince Flynn, Brad Thor, AJ Tada etc, you will love this series. Start with the Bricklayer...

excellent read, great insights, crafted with scholarly thoughtfulness

I work at a college and spend a considerable amount of time guiding leadership development with students and colleagues. I'm often looking for new sources and content that will challenge my teams to grow as serving leaders.One of the challenges I often face is to find content that offers both "meat" and "milk" -- a balance of thoughtful content with practical application points. This is what I most loved about Storied Leadership... about 2/3rds of the book focuses on some "big questions" and why they matter. Martel and Jensen thoughtfully guide the readers to explore the significance of universal truths, worldview concepts, and major life questions for true leadership. Finally, they "land" these concepts with an assembly of beautifully simple but thoughtfully-laid out leadership principles.

A few other aspects of this that I enjoyed:
- The content is deeply breathed in Biblical concepts, Christian thought, and faith realities.
- Each chapter concludes with excellent questions for personal reflection or group discussion. (I think the initial chapters would be best "milked" through a group leader discussing the content with students. The later chapters could be easily journaled.)
- This text provides content that's thoughtful and rich enough to be included in a student training course, like the academic course we have our RAs take. The content naturally lends itself to richer exploration, exploring references, and reflective journaling.
- The authors do not take the "easy" path of describing and exploring leadership. There is no "five simple ways to be a leader" here -- they describe and navigate a matured perspective of meaningful leadership.
- Jensen and Martel speak as scholar-practitioners. This book shows a caliber of thought and authorship that is on par with more commonly-published scholars on good leadership content.

Rarely does a book on leadership so nicely combine the theoretical and the practical.

So often books on leadership, whether Christian or otherwise, fall into one of two camps: Totally theoretical in a way that's hard to wrap your mind around, or just a simple "how to" formula with no real substance behind them. I've been reading books on leadership for years, as part of my undergraduate and graduate studies, and as a church leader; and I have never read a book that so nicely combines the theoretical and the practical. It was at the same time meaningful, deep, and inspiring, yet somehow also light and easy to read. It combines both Biblical truths and modern pop-culture references in a way you might not have ever heard before, but totally make sense.

Storied Leadership is perfect for anyone of any age considering what it means to be a leader: in their school, their place of work, their church, or their extra-curricular. I dare you to read this and NOT be inspired to move, to change, to challenge your own leadership and the lives of those around you.

Do not start this BULLS*$@! Series

This ONE book is broken up into 9 books. 9 BOOKS!!!! Seriously?! Maybe two or three could be justified but really, 9?! Why?!?! Oh it's because you start off with the first 50 pages at $.99 and then at book 4 it's $2.99 from there making the totally cost of what should be one average size book $21. You would think that when you start paying $2.99 you would get more than 35 minutes of reading but you don't. DONT EVEN START THIS SERIES

A CAPTIVATING BEGINNING !!!

Discipline is the first book in Kelly Favor's exciting new serial, The Billionaire's Rules. This is my very first time reading Favor's work but I must say, I am impressed with what I've read so far. This is a serial folks so there will be multiple installments and dare I say it, cliffhangers. Yikes! Each installment is relatively short which makes them perfect for a quick break or lunchtime read. Although it's difficult to get a full sense of the plot of this story from only a few pages, I believe I may have a general idea of the direction the author intends to lead us. The journey begins with Ivy Spellman, a recent college graduate who has been hired as a data entry temp by Biomatrix Pharma, one of the largest and most prestigious drug companies in Boston. Out of her group, she has been singled out by the handsome CEO of the company, Cullen Sharpe who has for no apparent reason chosen her to bring him his coffee. Ivy had always been the shy, quiet, mousy student who always sat in front, kept her head down, took meticulous notes and got good grades. She has just recently finished school and has no real job experience other than working as a part time grocery clerk so this is her first real job. She has no idea why Mr. Sharpe has taken an unusual interest in her but she only hopes that it doesn't lead to her termination. It certainly couldn't be because of her good looks because she would never be beautiful enough to attract the attention of someone like handsome, wealthy Cullen Sharpe. Even her manager, Emma Marks, seems to immediately dislike her. What the heck? After Ivy spills a cup of scalding hot coffee in Mr Sharpe's lap, she is called to his office to discuss her failure of his assigned task and to Ivy's surprise, he offers her tutelage in the form of.......discipline. What? Mr Sharpe presents Ivy with a choice but what will she decide??? Oh my! Super sexy boss-check! Beautiful, shy virgin-check! Office politics, drama, domination and heated attraction-you bet! The story is smart, exciting, provocative, arousing and well written. The characters are captivating, engaging and sexy. The verdict is still out but so far so good. We'll see what happens in the next installment. Seriously sexy and definitely entertaining!

Just okay!

I am giving this entire series this low rating as it was originally a Kindle Unlimited series, but when I got to Book 6 this was no longer the case. The $2.99 price for 30+ pages is really steep. Would love to have found out how the series ended, but Lord only knows how much longer the series is going to continue. Although this is a "good" read, it is certainly not worth the at least $25.00 it would cost if it ended with the eighth installment.
Will only consider reading anything by her if it is complete, if then!

Lots of info

These are all great books with so much information. My 7 year old son has been reading them for the past two years and really enjoys them. He remembers so much about history from these books. It gives you odd facts that you may not get from a history book. Beware that some of the books can be a little violet, details about war and killing and such.

About the Author

Joseph Weber has been working with Java full-time since its early alpha stages and has helped advise a number of Fortune 500 companies on the goals of Java. Joe has served on advisory committees for and taught classes at universities in the Midwest, and continues to be a strong advocate for Java in the educational environment. Most recently, Joe contributed to Sams Java Web Services Unleashed (067232363X), due in April 2002.

Mark Wutka is a consultant who specializes in helping companies get the most out of Java. He has built numerous Java, JSP and servlet applications for clients including Delta Airlines, and has taught classes, written articles and books, and given lectures. Good Starting Point

I like this book. It was a big help for me to get started with Weblogic Workshop. I found it to be organized pretty well and the information extremely helpful.
I would recommend this book to someone that wanted to get started quickly with Workshop. But one problem is by the time I got this book and created Web Services with 7.0 then Weblogic 8.1 hit the market.
Also, the BEA documentation is very good and I could have probably gotten by using their resources. However, the amount of documentation and detail is overwhelming. I found this book helpful as well as an excellent starting point for WebServices and Workshop.

good book for starters

I have read this book and find that it is a good book if you want to get started with Web services on BEA Weblogic workshop. The starting chapters are good and they really work in Workshop but the ending chapters have lost focus and become very theoretical. If the authors can work the last chapters so that they provide more hands on knowledge to devlopers, it would be great...

Worth the Money

If you want to learn Workshop, buy this book! By the end of the book you will be flying thru the tool.
The early chapters go easy and introduce the development environment. This is extremely well written.
And the examples in the early chapters work! You can easily create the web services yourself.
The later chapters loose focus on examples and more just explain how to do the task using workshop. And then the final chapter, "An Online Ordering System", seems to be written by an alein; the one web services does not work and will not work the way it is declared, one of the jave files is missing completely from the text but is provided on the CD. This is the reason for only four stars.
And then when you go to SAMSPUBLISHING web site, they have lost the book completely.
