Life Changing!

Strategies: The Magic Key book is a revealing look into our own needs as a person. We all share these needs and yet most often aren't aware of the role they are playing in our own lives.

Author Ken Keacher breaks these needs down and shows us how we can incorporate that understanding to enhance the quality of our lives and that is a priceless gift of understanding! As a Passionate Living Life Coach, I found Strategies: The Magic Key to be very insightful and useful for myself and my clients.

Must have resource for Life Coaches

This book is an excellent basis for self-improvement. He provides a short history lesson and introduces you to an alternate approach using human needs psychology. This is a very easy read and structured to provide the reader a useful and effective new toolset to change his/herself in positive and productive ways. I promise you that if you try the concepts here, you WILL find old problems in life melt away. Your new strategy will be to be who you really are. What better gift to give yourself than to be authentically you?

Craig Anderton is one of the most widely respected pro audio writers today. He is currently editor-in-chief of Harmony Central and executive editor of EQ magazine. Best Used as a Teaching Manual Rather Than a Reference Book

The price of Sonar Home Studio 7XL has dropped so dramatically that it has become the PC equivalent of Apple's Garageband. The Sonar program is far more feature rich but is not as intuitive as Garageband. This book solves the problem for Sonar.

If you follow the instructions in the book you will learn how to create loop based music, how to record real instruments, how to use virtual instruments, how to use synthesizers, how to add effects, and finally how to mix and master a recording. The written instructions are very easy to follow and the there are many illustrations to supplement the teaching materials.

Where Sonar parts company with Garageband is in the use of synthesizers. Sonar's parent company is Cakewalk and Cakewalk is known for its phenomenal synthesizers. To operate these synthesizers you need to understand midi (musical instrument digital interface) and this book covers the topic in a very non-threatening way.

It took me 3 months to finish the book from cover to cover and I am able to create the exact sound I want. My failings as an instrumentalist and vocalist can be edited.

Sonar Home Studio is a relatively old program that works on notepad computers with little memory or hard drive storage. Sonar has moved on with far more sophisticated software which works best on System 7 and 64 bit operating platform. Having finished the instructions in this book you will have the pleasant choice of sticking with a very adequate recording program or taking on the challenge of working with the latest Sonar software which incorporates much of what is in version 7 but which competes in another league with other high-end recording software.

A Massive Undertaking, Done Well

Hi: First of all, I have been around audio recording since way before computer audio recording ever existed. This book is a composite of a number of different generations of this program, which had to be a massive challenge for the author to assimilate evenhandedly. These programs (including the video ones) are like the seven cities of Troy, with each generation being built on the foundations of the previous one. Imho, these programs become vastly complicated, to anyone who is not deeply knowledgable about the nuances of these programs. In fact, I find it so complicated, as I am basically teaching myself, and even though I feel I am fairly computer comfortable, I just really and truly miss analog recording, just so I don't have to go through all of the frustration with the intricacies of working digitally. Then again, I am not a teenage computer Wiz Kid. I do however, own Sony Acid Studio 9, and it seems to be a little more user friendly, and it appears to have more capabilites, but then again, I use Sonar on my XP computer, and Acid on my Windows 7 Home Premium computer. All in all, I tip my hat to this author, who must be one heck of a digital music technician...

About the Author

Jordi Tejel is a Ph.D. in History (University of Fribourg, Switzerland) and Sociology (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales-EHESS, Paris). He is currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the EHESS, Paris. His research interests focus on nationalism in the Middle East, with a particular interest in Kurdish mobilizations in the interwar period. He is the author of several books and articles, including Le mouvement kurde de Turquie en exil. Continuit�s et discontinuit�es du nationalisme kurde sous le mandat fran�ais en Syrie et au Liban (1925-1946).

The transformation of painting from an inexpensive to a costly art form reached a crucial stage in the royal courts of Europe in the seventeenth century, where rulers and aristocrats assembled huge collections, often in short periods of time. Brown traces this process in Madrid, Paris, London, and Brussels, beginning with the dispersal of the great English collections in the aftermath of the Civil War, including those of Charles I, the Earl of Arundel, and the Dukes of Buckingham and Hamilton. Hundreds of great pictures were all at once available to continental collectors and were acquired by Cardinal Jules Mazarin, Louis XIV of France, Archduke Leopold William of Austria, and Philip IV of Spain, as well as lesser-known collectors, including Everhard Jabach and Luis de Haro. Through comparative analysis of collecting and collectors at these courts, Brown explains the formation of new attitudes toward pictures, as well as the mechanisms that supported the enterprise of collecting, including the emergence of the art dealer, the development of connoisseurship, and the publication of sumptuous picture books of various collections.

A fine addition to any European history collection

I first saw this book in a store display and was captivated by it's breathtaking and sweeping art work from talents ranging from Bosch to da Vinci. It captures 17th century European art with style and grace rarely found in other books. Being a big Anne Rice fan, I was most captivated by the painting Crucifixion Altar, by Roger van de Weyden, which depicts Veronica holding her famous veil, which plays a key role in Rice's book Memnoch the Devil. Other highlights include Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights and Raphael's Archangel Michael. The color of the paintings are superb, and the text is a perfect match. Bearing in mind that 17th European paintings depict many religious icons, it's a wonderful book to posses, whether you're religious or not. A magnificent find.

About the Author
Lou Szoke holds master of photography and craftsman degrees from the Professional Photographers of America. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Fuji Masterpiece award and the Professional Photographers of America Photographer of the Year. He has traveled throughout North America teaching other professional photographers black-and-white, Hollywood-style lighting techniques. He lives in Springfield, Illinois.

Not about Hollywood portraits!

This is not a book about how to make Hollywood-style portraits! In fact, the styles used by the master portrait artists of Hollywood's classical period are barely discussed. If you want to learn about classic Hollywood portraits and how to take them, get "Hollywood Portraits, Classic Shots and How to Take Them" by Roger Hicks and Christopher Nisperos.

This is a book about the hot-light techniques used by portrait artist Lou Szoke. But the use of hot lights does not make a Hollywood portrait. The title aside, the book has some wonderful portraits made by a highly talented artist, but that is about as far as it goes. The text accompanying each photo is generally uninformative. And though his portraits are inviting, I find the author a little alienating. Overall, he comes across as not trying to help or inform us as much as "fix" us.

For each photo, some critical information is missing, such as what light modifiers were used. And there is no exposure information. In most of the diagrams the fill and key lights appear close together, which makes no sense.

If you've read other books published by Amherst Media you know that they are generally shallow in depth, lacking in scope and prone to errors. If you use hot lights for portraiture, this book is worth buying for the photos, just don't expect much else. But if you are interested in Hollywood portraits, get the Roger Hicks book.

Going Old School a receipe book

I have to say I wanted a book like this for a very long time. I have always enjoyed the classic Hollywood Style of black and white photography made famous in the 40's & 50's.
Just like a classic 57 chevy or 66 mustang. I don't think this style will ever go out of style. Now with all of that said I would think of this book as my recipe book for Hollywood style photography. For example taking us thru the case for Hot lights and explaining the different kinds of lights, the camera room environment. The book also offers tips on output, once you create these fantastic photos you don't send them to a local discount lab to print this premium product. I like page 87 with the Mother in Law examples and lighting diagrams. You photographer who want to go Old School this book is for us.

Continuous Lighting Training

This book is for those photographers who wish to understand Tungsten, "hot light," or continuous lighting techniques. It is also good information for photographers trying to adopt the style of the great Hollywood portrait photographers of the 30s and 40s. Szoke offer plenty of detail on the use of "hot lights" and their various modifying devices to help "Paint With Light." Painting with Light is a term bandied about quite often, especially by photography critics, but little is offered on what it is, how do you do it, and what works and what doesn't. This book definitely changes all of that. Szoke gives plenty of detailed information in a practical day-to-day manner. There are plenty of lighting diagrams, and illustrations of the many techniques possible. The only aspect missing, and it would have made for a hefty tome if included, would be a section on how to modify light to hide physical feature flaws, and how to properly light specific portrait subjects (Mr. Szoke -- a possible follow-up volume?). This book is a definite must buy for anyone wishing to learn to "Paint by Light."
