Good book just not what I needed

It's probably not the author's fault but this book did not adequately prepare me for the IBHRE CEPS exam. The questions on the exam were posed in a manner different than what this book prepares you for and it included content not covered by the book.

Comprehensive guide to the mandolin

I've played the guitar for years and have always wanted to learn the mandolin. But when I've tried to play it, it is so different from the guitar that I get frustrated quickly and stop. I got this guide to inspire me to try again-- and it has done that. The only thing I would have preferred (and the reason I didn't give it 5 stars) is a spiral-bound format so I could place it more easily on my music stand. It's very hard to prop it open to the page you want. Dummies guide folks, are you listening?

(December 2013 update to this review: Many helpful readers have let me know that Kinko's has a service where they will convert the book to a spiral bound format. So there you go- problem solved.) But since I have to do this myself, I'm still deducting one star from the review. :)

If the mandolin is your first instrument just remember that learning to play any instrument is an investment of time, patience, and, yes, sore fingers. Those 8 strings combined with small frets can make your hand feel like a large claw trying to find the individual notes-- but hang in there. Take it easy and practice for just 15 minutes or so a day. Once you learn a few chords, you can even practice changing them while you watch TV.

This guide is quite comprehensive and will cover everything you need to know about playing the mandolin. It provides good instruction on selecting the mandolin (support your local music store if you can!); helpful tips for playing (such as "listen to mandolin music"-- just like people who read a lot are better writers, people who listen to mandolin music will be better players); samples of different types of mandolin music; left and right hand techniques, etc.

This book will keep you busy-- probably for at least 6 months-- maybe a year. That's right-- unless you already play, don't expect to whip through this book in a week or so. This is a commitment.

My final suggestion-- join a jam session or start one in your community. Look for old-time, bluegrass, Celtic, or other musical gatherings in your area. Don't worry if you can only go and listen at first. Bring your instrument and strum chords when you can. Gradually you'll learn a song or two and you'll be on your way to a lot of fun.

most comprehensive and clearly written.

Been trying to learn mandolin for about 4 years via youtube videos and instructional books and this is the most comprehensive and clearly written book i've seen. It covers every aspect of mandolin (this is what a mandolin looks like) through advanced playing techniques.

the heart of the book is chappters 4-14 that start with 2 finger chords and then move on to right and left hand techniques, chord building, picking patterns and applying them to different styles of mandolin music. Bluegrass, blues, jazz, swing, , old time tunes, brazilian and irish music and of course, dawg music.

Two of the best features are that he seems to anticipate every question that most beginner/intermediate players would have and he also gives you a sense of why you do it this or that way. for those severly allergic to music theory (i'm one of them) it's in there but only as it's applicable to everyday playing.

this book actually makes it fun to practice (not noodling), but focused practice. that in itself is a huge achievement. will keep me busy for a few years.

Awesome book

This book is absolutely packed full. It features easily understood and outstanding technique instruction ranging from basic to difficult. It also covers music theory, history, music appreciation, the society of mandolinists, the aesthetics and the mechanics and all the fascinating differences of styles. One can graze on the smorgasbord or gorge themselves on any of the many entrees. The chapters on the left hand and the Jethro style chords could be studied and practiced for months. My only criticism is that after reading the chapter on 10 mando musicians to listen to, I had to visit iTunes and am now 100$ poorer.

About the Author
Michael Dante DiMartino is an American animation director best known as the co-creator, executive producer, and story editor of the animated TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, both on Nickelodeon. He was born in Shelburne, Vermont.He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design with Bryan Konietzko, with whom he created Avatar. Before Avatar, Mike worked for twelve years at Film Roman, helping to direct King of the Hill, Family Guy, and Mission Hill in addition to his own animated short, Atomic Love. Packed with great art just like the earlier artbooks

Going through the book brings back nice memories of watching the animation. Korra's story arc may have its ups and downs but this book presents an overview from the production point of view.

The large hardcover is similar in format to the other Korra artbooks. It has 184 pages. Some places have listed it incorrectly as having only 120 pages. This book is much thicker than that.

Publisher Dark Horse has once again done a fantastic job at filling the book with plenty of concept and production art.

The artworks are sorted by the episodes of the show. There are character designs, background art, concept sketches, storyboards and miscellaneous art from guest arts. Many characters have taken new roles and evolved with a change of look. And it's great to see Toph again (who contributed the funniest moments in the show). The painted background art often come with pencil sketches as well.

There's insightful commentary by Bryan Konietzko, Michael Dante DiMartino and Joaquim Dos Santos. They talk about the design, story and character development. For that, you get a deeper understanding and appreciation for how the animation was made.

All the good things from earlier artbooks apply to this book as well. Needless to say, this is a fantastic book that all fans should get.

I know that there are many people who didn't like The Legend of Korra

I haven't even received the book yet, but the purchase price is absolutely worth it for if nothing else, "Turtleduck Date Night". When I pre-ordered, I wasn't certain if it would be included in the book, but I am ecstatic that it was! It was extremely kind of the publisher to put this artwork in the book for those of us who will never have the opportunity to own one of the limited edition prints of said work of art. I know the series ended last year, but I miss it so much already, and at least with the book, fans will have some added insight into the spectacular fourth book of this engaging series.

I know that there are many people who didn't like The Legend of Korra, and compare it to Avatar: The Last Airbender and find LOK lacking, but I've always held that Avatar: The Last Airbender had to be made, so that birth could be given to The Legend of Korra.

I will never be disappointed in this art books. It gives a better view of what it takes to create such amazing show. The book is neat and well worth it. The image quality is amazing as well as the effort the creators out on this.
