Robert McChesney makes no bones about it: he is a democrat with a small "d," and in this book, Rich Media, Poor Democracy: Communication Politics in Dubious Times, that spells leftist. As a media scholar (McChesney is a communications professor at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign), he is primarily concerned with "the contradiction," as he puts it, "between a for-profit, highly concentrated, advertising-saturated, corporate media system and the communication requirements of a democratic society." As a citizen, he favors resolving this contradiction through measures that would make your average CEO's skin crawl: massive government subsidies for nonprofit journalism, vigorous antitrust litigation aimed at media conglomerates, and robust regulation of corporate broadcasters.

If your politics lie anywhere to the right of Ralph Nader's, in other words, don't come to this book looking for validation. But for a stimulating, nuanced, and rigorously researched presentation of the case for overhauling the current media regime, look no further. McChesney displays a sure grasp of today's fast-evolving, high-tech mediascape, and his arguments about how to shape its future evolution (especially his critique of the now-prevalent idea that corporations deserve First Amendment rights) unfold with an often-startling common sense. Whether or not you agree with his prescriptions in the end, McChesney's sweepingly expansive notions of democracy--and of the importance of media within it--demand to be reckoned with. --Julian Dibbell

Review
Paradox beats close to the heart of revolutionary periods in history. At the beginning of his book about the French Revolution, A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens famously observed that "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness."

The same might be said of our own era. Certainly these days are the best of times in a lot of ways. A Gallup poll last January found that Americans' "overall satisfaction" stands at 69 percent - a record.

But some see a dark lining in the silver cloud of our prosperity. Perennial cyber-promoter Douglas Rushkoff came out last year with Coercion, a disturbing look at the threats to privacy lurking behind every door. In Code, Harvard Law School professor Lawrence Lessig warned of the invisible hand of those who build the Net's underlying structure.

Now comes Robert McChesney with Rich Media, Poor Democracy, which focuses on the paradox of today's media: the perception of choice vs. the reality of concentrated ownership.

McChesney is a research associate professor in the Institute of Communications Research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as well as a leading member of that vestige of the old left called "media criticism," whence come many of the most dire warnings about current trends.

"This is an age of dazzling breakthroughs in communication and information technologies," McChesney observes. "Communication is so intertwined with the economy and culture that our times have been dubbed the Information Age."

As the title of his book implies, though, McChesney wonders if the modern-day boom in information channels doesn't simply give the illusion of democracy. The mass market has been broken into thousands of niches, but does freedom of choice equal freedom? McChesney says no.

Moving invisibly behind the rapid expansion of outlets is a disquieting and historic trend toward consolidation, he argues. "The striking structural features of the U.S. media system in the 1990s are concentration and conglomeration." The result, he adds, is that the media have become an antidemocratic force in America. As he sees it, "democracy is in a decrepit state."

He readily admits that his warnings of consolidation may sound more like a faint cry of "wolf" in the face of our present-day stampede of new Web sites, publications and TV stations.

"It may seem ironic that these are the dominant structural features when, to the casual observer, the truth can appear quite the opposite," he writes. "We seem inundated in different media, from magazines and radio stations to cable television channels, and now Web sites."

But if you look closely, he says, consolidation is pervasive. In the Internet Economy, for instance, there are ubiquitous affiliate programs, electronic commerce partnerships, navigators and mergers of historic magnitude as the recent AOL-Time Warner marriage.

Of course, McChesney is not the first to sound the alarm about the dangers of media monopoly. In 1822, James Madison wrote that "a popular government without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a prologue to a farce or a tragedy, or perhaps both." In the 20th century, prominent media critics have included Ben Bagdikian (The Media Monopoly), Noam Chomsky (Media Control) and Norman Solomon (The Habits of Highly Deceptive Media).

Consequently, McChesney's book might sound like a rehash of old arguments. While Rich Media, Poor Democracy continues down a well-worn path of media criticism, it nevertheless breaks important new ground.

For instance, McChesney points out that media concentration has traditionally been horizontal, but its modern form is vertical. For example, all but 16 of America's 148 widely distributed films in 1997 were produced by the six largest studios. That's horizontal concentration.

The shift to vertical integration means a studio like Walt Disney now controls not only the content, but also many of the stages before and after - movie studios, TV-program production facilities, cable channels, broadcast networks, broadcast channels, record labels, magazines, newspapers, book publishers, and the list goes on and on.

Vertical integration is why Disney toy figures start showing up in fast-food restaurants whenever the studi0 premieres a new film.

Not only is the average American oblivious to what's happening, McChesney says, the U.S. government is also tuning out. Regulators let mergers slide under tremendous pressure from the telecommunications and entertainment industries. He notes virtually no one in government is looking out for the public interest in the media field.

To explain their laxity, regulators almost invariably put forward the same answer: the Internet. How can you say there's consolidation, they reason, when there's so much growth on the Net? The Internet upends the rationale for regulating media mergers, McChesney adds, or for regulating media at all.

Once upon a time, the major media conglomerates possessed the only access to millions of Americans. Now, the argument goes, anyone with a few dollars can launch a Web site and compete with the media titans. McChesney wrote last year in The Progressive that "proponents of the Internet act as though it is a massive comet crashing into the Earth that will drive media giants into extinction."

It's not happening, he says. The Internet may be changing the nature of the media, but in five years it has yet to produce a competitive marketplace. The dinosaurs still hold all the cards: the programming, the brand names, the advertisers, the promotional prowess and the capital to rule the Internet. By 1999, he writes, "notions of the Internet providing a new golden age of competitive capitalism were quickly fading from view in the business press." Worse, he argues, the Internet is swiftly being co-opted by the corporate communication system.

McChesney says any notion of the Internet as a democratic medium is dubious at best: "A market-driven digital communication system seems just as likely to accentuate widening class divisions as to lessen them."

To many people, McChesney's warnings will sound like predictions of rain in the desert. Indeed, after the recent AOL-Time Warner merger, Time Warner Chairman Gerald Levin told an ABC Good Morning America audience that "this is not just about big business; this is not just about money. This is about making a better world for people because we now have the technology and the instruments to do that." Calling the Internet "wildly democratic," Levin said that one of the goals of the new merger is to bridge the so-called digital divide, "to try and make sure that ultimately those who can't afford it can get it."

"There are companies with people inside who really care about using the Internet for social progress," he added. "And that's what we're going to try to do."

About the same time, Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone told a "town hall" group in Beverly Hills, Calif., that "consumers of entertainment have never had so many choices, and producers and distributors of entertainment have never had so much competition. I believe this is the first of many mergers to come."

Indeed, paradox seems to define our age. But maybe it always has. "Capitalism and democracy are not synonymous," McChesney points out, "nor have they ever been."

He writes: "Capitalism is innately in conflict with the core tenets of democracy. The core reason is that capitalism is invariably a class society where a very small percentage of the population has most of the society's wealth and a disproportionate share of its income."

More people might join the author in a discussion of that dynamic but, he states, the topic "has been decidedly off-limits as a subject in U.S. political debate."

It's as if the paradox no longer exists. It's the best of times. End of discussion. A line from the 1995 film The Usual Suspects comes to mind: "The greatest trick the devil ever played was convincing the world he doesn't exist."

Reading McChesney's book, you're reminded that these days conglomeration is not seen as a threat but as a goal, not the province of the elite but the dream of the e-commerce masses. It's the old Horatio Alger story, updated: The wish of almost every small Web businesses is to be affiliated, partnered, consolidated, merged into something greater - and more profitable.

The popularity of that notion makes reform all the more remote a possibility, even for a resourceful old warrior like McChesney. Consolidation is not something that just happens to AOL and Time Warner - to them. It's now something that can happen to you and me, to us.

John Fraim is president of the GreatHouse Company, a publisher and consulting firm in Santa Rosa, Calif. -- From The Industry Standard

From the Inside Flap
Robert McChesney argues that the media, far from providing a bedrock for freedom and democracy, have become a significant antidemocratic force in the United States and, to varying degrees, worldwide.

Rich Media, Poor Democracy addresses the corporate media explosion and the corresponding implosion of public life that characterizes our times. Challenging the assumption that a society drenched in commercial information "choices" is ipso facto a democratic one, McChesney argues that the major beneficiaries of the so-called Information Age are wealthy investors, advertisers, and a handful of enormous media, computer, and telecommunications corporations. This concentrated corporate control, McChesney maintains, is disastrous for any notion of participatory democracy.

Combining unprecedented detail on current events with historical sweep, McChesney chronicles the waves of media mergers and acquisitions in the late 1990s. He reviews the corrupt and secretive enactment of public policies surrounding the Internet, digital television, and public broadcasting. He also addresses the gradual and ominous adaptation of the First Amendment ("freedom of the press") as a means of shielding corporate media power and the wealthy.

Rich Media, Poor Democracy exposes several myths about the media -- in particular, that the market compels media firms to "give the people what they want" -- that limit the ability of citizens to grasp the real nature and logic of the media system. If we value our democracy, McChesney warns, we must organize politically to restructure the media in order to affirm their connection to democracy.

Democracy and the Corporate Media: A Brilliant Critique
By Joseph G. Peschek
"Rich Media, Poor Democracy" is the most important recent book for anyone concerned with the real world of democracy under corporate capitalism in the year 2000. In a detailed, substantive, highly-readable study, McChesney explores how corporate control of the mass media shapes and constrains news and culture, sharply limits real freedom of the press, and undermines popular self-government as a result. McChesney shows how growing corporate media concentration threatens the open system of communication and culture that is vital to democracy - rule by the majority. I know of no other book that cuts through the neo- liberal market idolatry of our times. Yet McChesney offers hope: imaginative yet concrete ways in which citizens might contest the power of the corporate media and reclaim the best of our democratic heritage. A superb book, highly recommended.

SUSPICIONS CONFIRMED!
By A Customer
In this very important book, McChesney has done a great job of researching how our media have evolved over the past 80 years. Anyone who wonders why today's radio and TV are insipid wastes of our public airwaves (which they get to use for free) will find the answers here. Newspapers aren't far behind in this downward spiraling toward content-free mush. We are surely a more ignorant and less cultured nation in large part due to decisions made in the late 1920s and early 1930s, when the idea of establishing radio as a public, education-oriented system was tragically shot down. Now we are left with a floundering, increasingly commercialized National Public Broadcasting System, and a shockingly hypercommercialized, inbred, overmerged "free-market" media system, made worse by the give-away Telecommunications Act of 1996 that hardly anyone knows about--for good reason: the media must not want us to know what they've done. This book will really open your eyes. You might even want to cry over the missed opportunities we have had as a society due to the rapaciousness of Big Media. Would have given the book 5 stars, but it's too academic/pedantic to be pleasurable reading. Also, the author occasionally rants more than is seemly in an ostensibly objective history. Still, who can can blame him? I felt like ranting too while reading it.

Invaluable Information and Analysis About Media and Society
By A Customer
"Rich Media, Poor Democracy" is different than the usual media criticism in several important ways. It is accessible and readable. It is relevant and timely. It is populist rather than elitist. And the conclusions are irrefutable rather than subjective or interpretive.
Anyone who is interested in why our media and entertainment sources are the way they are, especially in these rapidly changing times, has to read this book. Anyone who is interested in why our world is the way it is really ought to read it, too.
For an analysis of today's media economy, you really can't find a better book.

About the Author

Charles J. Fombrun is Executive Director of the Reputation Institute and Professor Emeritus of Management at the Stern School of Business of New York University. Before discovering the social sciences, he earned a B.S. in Physics from Queen's University (Canada) and did his early research on magnetic levitation. The Advice Business - a great refresher for an experienced management consultant
By Mark Haas
This is a phenomenally well researched, organized and written book. Covering the foundations of the professional services business, Fombrun and Nevins proceed from the tenets and history of the consulting profession, to the process of consulting, and the operation of the consulting firm, concluding with ethics. It is always interesting that, even though ethics underlies the trusted advisor relationship between consultant and client, it often seems to be an afterthought to books about consulting, as if its function was only as a nice bow with which to wrap the package.

The writing is blessedly forthright, and moves along without a lot of filler that weighs down many books on the consulting profession. Written more like a textbook, it might give the uninitiated the sense that absorbing the book is all one needs to hang out a shingle as a management consultant. However, without some years of experience and a dozen or more engagements, this will not make one an effective consultant. This book is probably best as a refresher or complement to an experienced consultant's existing knowledge, judgment and technique.

Photocopy Quality Printing
By Sebastian Kristafor
I was unhappily surprised when I received the book.
While I have not read the content of the book, the quality of the printing is atrocious.
It appears that the original has been photocopied, the pages cut to size and pasted within a cover. While the text is
clearly visible, many figures are faded. The paper itself is not the usual smooth book quality, but the slightly rougher document quality.
This is the first textbook I have ever purchased that has been this quality.

Upon contacting the publishers "Pearson Prentice Hall", I was informed that the sub-standard quality that they are putting out is due to the low demand for the book. I advise would-be purchasers to look to other alternatives and save themselves the $133 for a book that cost about $10 to print.

Elizabeth Peters's unforgettable heroine Amelia Peabody makes her first appearance in this clever mystery. Amelia receives a rather large inheritance and decides to use it for travel. On her way through Rome to Egypt, she meets Evelyn Barton-Forbes, a young woman abandoned by her lover and left with no means of support. Amelia promptly takes Evelyn under her wing, insisting that the young lady accompany her to Egypt, where Amelia plans to indulge her passion for Egyptology. When Evelyn becomes the target of an aborted kidnapping and the focus of a series of suspicious accidents and mysterious visitations, Amelia becomes convinced of a plot to harm her young friend. Completely fun!
By Kristin S.
I am always wanting new, entertaining books to read. So, when a friend recommended Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody mysteries (starting with "Crocodile on the Sandbank"), I jumped right in.
As someone else pointed out, the mystery aspect of Crocodile on the Sandbank is not the strongest part of this novel. (Don't be surprise if you guess the purpose and identity of the stalking mummy well before it is revealed.)
In every other way, this book is excellent. The characters, plot and description are delightfully entertaining. Amelia Peabody, a Victorian-era spinster of means, embarks for a tour of Egypt. But first, while in Rome, she encounters Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who has been "ruined" by her former lover. Amelia insists that Evelyn accompany her. Once in Egypt, they meet Radcliffe and Walter Emerson. These four characters are incredible. They have strong personalities without becoming two-dimensional characatures. The way Amelia and Evelyn relate is touching, and the way Amelia and Emerson play off eachother is classic.
I don't know much about ancient Egypt, but Elizabeth Peters provides so much fascinating description. She really seems to know what she's talking about. (In fact, she got a Ph.D. in Egyptology.)
Crocodile on the Sandbank made me want to know more about Egyptology and archaeology. It certainly made me want to read more of the beautiful descriptions and wonderfully drawn characters.

This is the first book in the Amelia Peabody Series
By Avid Reader JKK
Once I read this one, I was hooked. A great series with fun mysteries, amazing settings and fantastic characters. I have given this book to many friends as gifts and all have loved it!
If you are new to this series, here are some things you might like to know...
Elizabeth Peters also writes under the name Barbara Michaels (not sure which is her real name). Personally, I have not been impressed by some of her other books outside of the Peabody mysteries. The Amelia Peabody books are adventure/mystery stories that take place in Egypt, in the late 1800's.
Here are the books featuring Amelia Peabody in order from first to last:
1) Crocodile on the Sandbank (1975)
2) The Curse of the Pharaohs (1981)
3) The Mummy Case (1985)
4) Lion in the Valley (1986)
5) The Deeds of the Disturber (1988)
6) The Last Camel Died at Noon (1991)
7) The Snake, the Crocodile and the Dog (1992)
8) The Hippopotamus Pool (1996)
9) Seeing a Large Cat (1997)
10) The Ape Who Guards the Balance (1998)
11) The Falcon at the Portal (1999)
12) He Shall Thunder In The Sky (May 2000)
13) Lord of the Silent (May 2001)
14) The Golden One (April 2002)
15) Children of the Storm (April 2003)
Happy reading!

Eleanor Lavish goes to Egypt
By drdebs
Whenever I read Elizabeth Peter's Amanda Peabody novels, I cannot help thinking of Eleanor Lavish (played by Dame Judi Dench in a Room With A View). Remember Eleanor Lavish during the picture, proclaiming the benefits of Mackintosh Squares? Or her descriptions of Florence to Charlotte Bartlett? If you found Eleanor Lavish entertaining, you will LOVE Amelia Peabody.
Armed with a parasol, a first-aid kit, and a formidable confidence in the superiority of the British Empire and its cultural conventions, Amelia Peabody sets out for an adventure in Egypt. On her way, she rescues a fainting Englishwoman, hires a dahabeeyah to take her down the Nile to view archaeological remains, and meets the Emerson brothers. While Walter Emerson falls for our fainting Englishwoman, his older brother Radcliffe Emerson--as curmudgeonly as Amelia--begins to do battle for control of his archaeological site. His rival? Parasol-wielding Amelia Peabody, of course.
The plot, as other reviewers suggest, is purely secondary to the characters--especially Amelia. If you want to learn a little about Egypt and in the process solve a completely unsurprising mystery then you can have no better companion than the forthright Amelia Peabody. How many mysteries make you laugh out-loud at the antics of the heroine?

The Elements of Cognitive Aging: Meta-Analyses of Age-Related Differences in Processing Speed and Their Consequences, by Paul Verhaeghen

The Elements of Cognitive Aging provides a qualitative overview (mostly using graphical meta-analysis) of the vast literature on aging and speeded tasks-bringing together, for the first time, almost everything we know about aging and processing speed. The book investigates age-related slowing in elementary tasks (including updated parameters for the Aging Human Information Processor) and tasks of executive control (inhibition, task shifting, and task coordination). It examines regularities in the age-related effects of these tasks that might hint at underlying brain-related mechanisms, while having a keen eye for alternative explanations (such as increased caution with age). It models the course of speed-of-processing over the lifespan and investigates the influence of generational differences on mental speed. Finally, it examines the influence of age-related mental slowing on other aspects of cognition (working memory, executive control episodic memory, aspects of fluid intelligence), and provides the first systematic review of age-speed-cognition mediation in a longitudinal context.

A Truly Marvelous Book of Wordplay
By D. Mayer
Evans has done more than a great job of introducing people to a large cross-section of wordplay: He has produced one of the wittiest wordplay books I have ever read. His declared goal was to introduce readers to wordplay that is particularly funny, clever, or irreverent, and he has succeeded admirably. Even when Evans covers material found elsewhere, as in his chapter on insane real book titles, he plays with the material and adds his own wordplay. For example, he says that the book The Joy of Uncircumcising "has raised quite a flap, especially among our male members." Indeed, his entire section on insane real book titles contains his own hilarious, and often bawdy, wordplay.

What's more, he has sprinkled his personal touch throughout the book, as when he points out what others hadn't realized, such as that "n-sane policy" is an anagram of "Nancy Pelosi" and that "nice parasitic role" is an anagram of "career politicians." I particularly like his appendix, consisting of more than 400 homophones of real names listed on Zabasearch.com. Although I've seen some lists of people's funny names, I had never seen hundreds of hilarious homophonic names taken from real phone directories, yielding such sequences as "Anita Bath," "Anita Beaver," "Anita Beer," "Anita Bohn," "Anita Break," "Anita Carr," "Anita Doctor," and so on. Evans points out that some of the names become even funnier when one adds their locations; for example, "Dixie Normous" in Washington, D.C.

As to any critic who would say that much of the material in the book is available elsewhere (if one spends months reading books, articles, and websites), I'd defy anyone to point to any single book that is as comprehensive as Tyrannosaurus Lex. More than a reference book, it is encyclopedic in scope - a book that will appeal not only to seasoned logologists but also to wordplay novices. Even so, today's most popular logologist, Richard Lederer, has said of Evans that "nobody makes the alphabet dance more brilliantly and entertainingly" than he. Quite right!

In short, if you like wordplay, wit, and popular culture creatively combined, you can do no better than Tyrannosaurus Lex.

An excellent primer of logology
By Mike Grant
The focus of this book is what's known as recreational linguistics, or Logology. Basically, this is an introductions to the different forms of wordplay possible in the English language. This is a work of scholarship that's meant to be accessible to the masses. Therefore, the theory is minimal, and the simple explanations and examples are maximal.

This is not a guide to doing your own wordplay. It's descriptive rather than prescriptive. It tells you what's there -- and describes the flexibility of our language -- rather than giving you rules of how to play with language yourself. It's not a book of word games like games scholar David Parlett's excellent THE Book of Word Games.

Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in how our language can fold back on itself and logically contradict itself, or who enjoy how several layers of opposing meaning can coexist in a single phrase or statement. Anyone who enjoys learning about such things should enjoy this book.

Rather disappointing
By Crow
"Tyrannosaurus Lex" is a mildly interesting collection of woefully abbreviated lists of examples of various types of word-play, the components of which could easily be dragged from cyberspace given an afternoon's creative Googling. For the price, I had expected better. If you are new to the field of Logology, you may be rewarded with a few chuckles. If you have been a long-time fan of writers such as Richard Lederer and Willard R. Espy, there's nothing here you haven't seen before.
