Chapter 4: Invent Options for Mutual Gain

The case of Israel and Egypt negotiating over who should keep how much of the Sinai Peninsula illustrates both a major problem in negotiation and a key opportunity.

the pie that leaves both parties satisfied. Often you are negotiating along a single dimension, such as the amount of territory, the price of a car, the length of a lease on an apartment, or the size of a commission on a sale. At other times you face what appears to be an either/or choice that is either markedly favorable to you or to the other side. In a divorce settlement, who gets the house? Who gets custody of the children? You may see the choice as one between winning and losing- and neither side will agree to lose. Even if you do win and get the car for $12,000, the lease for five years, or the house and kids, you have a sinking feeling that they will not let you forget it. Whatever the situation, your choices seem limited.

option like a demilitarized Sinai can often make the difference between deadlock and agreement. One lawyer we know attributes his success directly to his ability to invent solutions advantageous to both his client and the other side. He expands the pie before dividing it. Skill at inventing options is one of the most useful assets a negotiator can have.

Yet all too often negotiators end up like the proverbial children who quarreled over an orange. After they finally agreed to divide the orange in half, the first child took one half, ate the fruit, and threw away the peel, while the other threw away. the fruit and used the peel from the second half in baking a cake. All too often negotiators "leave money on the table" - they fail to reach agreement when they might have, or the agreement they do reach could have been better for each side. Too many negotiations end up with half an orange for each side instead of the whole fruit for one and the whole peel for the other. Why?

DIAGNOSIS

As valuable as it is to have many options, people involved in a negotiation rarely sense a need for them. In a dispute, people usually believe that they know the right answer - their view should prevail. In a contract negotiation they are equally likely to believe that their offer is reasonable and should be adopted, perhaps with some adjustment in the price. All available answers appear to lie along a straight line between their position and yours. Often the only creative thinking shown is to suggest splitting the difference.

inventing of an abundance of options: (1) premature judgment; (2) searching for the single answer; (3) the assumption of a fixed pie; and (4) thinking that "solving their problem is their problem." In order to overcome these constraints, you need to understand them.

Premature judgment

Inventing options does not come naturally. Not inventing is the normal state of affairs, even when you are outside a stressful negotiation. If you were asked to name the one person in the world most deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize, any answer you might start to propose would immediately encounter your reservations and doubts. How could you be sure that that person was the most deserving? Your mind might well go blank, or you might throw out a few answers that would reflect conventional thinking: "Well, maybe the Pope, or the President."

pounce on the drawbacks of any new idea. Judgment hinders imagination.

sense is likely to be sharper. Practical negotiation appears to call for practical thinking, not wild ideas.

on the other side. Suppose you are negotiating with your boss over your salary for the coming year. You have asked for a $4,000 raise; your boss has offered you $1,500, a figure that you have indicated is unsatisfactory. In a tense situation like this you are not likely to start inventing imaginative solutions. You may fear that if you suggest some bright half-baked idea like taking half the increase in a raise and half in additional benefits, you might look foolish. Your boss might say, "Be serious. You know better than that. It would upset company policy. I am surprised. that you even suggested it." If on the spur of the moment you invent a possible option of spreading out the raise over time, he may take it as an offer: "I'm prepared to start negotiating on that basis." Since he may take whatever you say as a commitment, you will think twice before saying anything.

piece of information that will jeopardize your bargaining position. If you should suggest, for example, that the company help finance the house you are about to buy, your boss may conclude that you intend to stay and that you will in the end accept any raise in salary he is prepared to offer.

Searching for the single answer

In most people's minds, inventing simply is not part of the negotiating process. People see their job as narrowing the gap between positions, not broadening the options available. They tend to think, "We're having a hard enough time agreeing as it is. The last thing we need is a bunch of different ideas." Since the end product of negotiation is a single decision, they fear that freefloating discussion will only delay and confuse the process.

the second is premature closure. By looking from the outset for the single best answer, you are likely to short-circuit a wiser decision-making process in which you select from a large number of possible answers.

The assumption of a fixed pie

A third explanation for why there may be so few good options on the table is that each side sees the situation as essentially either/or - either I get what is in dispute or you do. A negotiation often appears to be a "fixed-sum" game; $100 more for you on the price of a car means $100 less for me. Why bother to invent if all the options are obvious and I can satisfy you only at my own expense?

Thinking that "solving their problem Is their problem"

A final obstacle to inventing realistic options lies in each side's concern with only its own immediate interests. For a negotiator to reach an agreement that meets his own self-interest he needs to develop a solution which also appeals to the self-interest of the other. Yet emotional involvement on one side of an issue makes it difficult to achieve the detachment necessary to think up wise ways of meeting the interests of both sides: "We've got enough problems of our own; they can look after theirs." There also frequently exists a psychological reluctance to accord any legitimacy to the views of the other side; it seems disloyal to think up ways to satisfy them. Shortsighted self- concern thus leads a negotiator to develop only partisan positions, partisan arguments, and one-sided solutions....

Great Information, Could Use Better Layout
By Lisa Shea
The title of Fisher and Ury's book is Getting to Yes - Negotiating Agreement without Giving In. It's a case where the title clearly lays out what the book is about. In Getting to Yes the authors present, step by step, how to find your way to a win-win solution that helps meet your goals while at the same time preserving the relationship so that future negotiations also go smoothly.

This book was the assigned textbook for a college course I took on negotiation, but it's one of those fairly rare cases where the material that's useful for a college course is also immensely useful for off-the-street people in a variety of situations. This book avoids complicated jargon and long, droning background chapters. Instead, it plunges into helpful information to assist people in negotiating for a new car, negotiating issues with their landlords, and all the many ways we all negotiate for our position throughout life.

Negotiation isn't just for union leaders trying to avert a strike. All of us negotiate each day as we try to juggle our many roles. We negotiate with our co-workers over assignments. We negotiate with our family members over chores. In an ideal world all of those discussions would go quickly, smoothly, and with as little strife as possible.

Getting to Yes provided numerous helpful examples which made their points more easy to understand. It is so true that people tend to remember stories where they might not remember dry text. When I think about this book I do remember several of the stories clearly, and those help to represent the points the authors were making. The stories help remind me to focus on the issues when negotiating and to look for objective standards to work with.

The information presented is wonderful, and immediately useful in life.

On the down side, this is a new version of older material. The authors chose to keep the initial book in its original form and then add on additional information at the end. I appreciate for historical reasons why they wanted to do that. However, from a fresh reader point of view, I feel they should present an integrated whole which most clearly presents the full information. The way the book is laid out currently, you have to go back and forth to find all information on a given topic.

Also, the format is not laid out for easy reference. If they went more for a "dummies" style with an easy to scan layout, graphs and charts to quickly find and scan, and quick end-summaries, that would make this more useful as a reference book to keep on a shelf. Right now if I had an issue to handle it would be less than quick to grab the book and find the answer. I would have to wade through the book to figure out where to get the support I needed.

Still, I do recommend that everyone read this book at least once, to build their skills in negotiation. It's something we all have to do!

VERY BASIC INTRO TO NEGOTIATING
By Denis Benchimol Minev
This is the first book I ever read on negotiating, and at the time I found it extremely good. However, since then, I have read both Shell's "Bargaining for Advantage" and Cialdini's "Influence", and found those two books immensely better than Getting to Yes, for a few different reasons.
Number of stories - in Getting to Yes, the authors do not offer enough stories to burn the concepts into the reader's mind. I personally think stories are the best way to communicate something like negotiating.
Actual psychological concepts explained - Getting to Yes is a summary of findings, and it never explains why certain things work. Without a deep understanding, it is not clear when the concepts work and when they don't. Especially in Influence, you really get to understand how to persuade someone by remembering the core psych concepts.
If you are just looking for a quick intro to negotiating, this is a decent book. If you would like to actually understand people and how to influence them, this is too basic.

Critical & Fundamental Book on Negotiation
By Clovis
The book, GETTING TO YES, by Roger Fisher and William Ury is perhaps the most important book on negotiation I have ever read. I have personally benefitted from this book simply because I am even more aware of the importance of preparation and identifying shared interests and taking advantage of them. Respect, always respect, the other person's interests. More importantly, know them well.

Highlights:
The book is on principled negotiation, which is essentially negotiation on merits. The aim is to reach a wise agreement, defined as meeting the legitimate interests of all parties to the extent possible, resolving conflicting interests fairly, and ensuring the agreement is durable and takes community interests in account.

The factors of principled negotiation include:

PEOPLE: separting people from the issues/problems.
INTERESTS: focus on them, particularly mutual interests, and not on "positions." E.g., the expression of "you are in no position to negotiation" is absolutely absurd. One, it is an assumption unless the person stating that carefully prepared. Two, it can generally only hurt the person stating that, generating hostility and conflict. A principled negotiator probes interests, raises questions. The question, then, is "what are your interests in this deal?" and "Why do you suppose that is a fair proposal?"
PLANNING: a skilled negotiator will gather, organize, and weigh all information carefully relating to a negotiation. If there is one concept I could share with you, it is "prepare."
CRITERIA: prior to reaching an agreement, the parties should agree to using objective criteria to measure an agreement; these include market value, precedent, and so forth.
OPTIONS: generate a variety of options to reach an agreement. Envision what a successful outcome would be from the negotiation prior to negotiation, then generate several possibilities of satisfying everyone's interests to obtain the goal.

Specific Questions I had that were answered:
a) When personally attacked, what to do?
Control yourself, let the other side vent, then remain silent. Do not embarrass them, do not attack back.

b) More on this concept of "interests?"
First, find shared interests. Two, acknolwedge the other side's interests as a part of the whole system of negotiation. Share what your interests are pointedly, then provide your reasoning for reaching your proposal.

c) If the other side is way more powerful?
One must know her/his BATNA well. It is your Best Alternative to Negotiated Agreement (I think that is the correct acroynm). The better your BATNA is, the more power you have. If you have a very bad BATNA, you must realize that "how" you negotiate is extremely important. Your BATNA should be your measure against any proposal made by the other side. If your BATNA is better, then you obviously reject the proposal.

d) What if the other side is choleric, tricky, and applies pressures to force me into agreement?
You should first recognize the tactics being used. "Oh, this is the old good and bad cop routine." Then, expose it. Say, "excuse me, unless I am mistaken, you two are playing good cop and bad cop with me. Now, let's just focus on interests and reach a mutually satisfying agreement." If they put sun in your eyes, request to move. If your enviroment is hostile or discomforting, you have a right to request a change in setting. Most importantly, recognize them... do not be phased by them.

e) I am powerful, they are weak. How should/can I exploit them?
Resources do not make you a powerful negotiator. All the king's soldiers and all the king's men cannot make you a powerful negotiator, particularly if your socalled "power" will not impact the other side. It is best to focus on mutual interests and attempt to reach an agreement to satisfying them. Threating a person, mentioning your power will most-likely undermine your ability to reach agreement.

In conclusion, this book can be a benefit for all people. Why? It shows you how to take into account other people's interests to satisfy your own. It is crucial for individuals to terminate the concept that to "win" in negotiations is to take advantage of other people. To succeed in negotiation, it is not about exploiting people but getting what you want. Essentially, satisfying your interests; this book can show you how.

I hope the above was helpful,
Clovis

==============================================

This is Somerset Maugham's last short story collection: published 32 years after his first masterpiece, ''Of Human Bondage'' (1915), and one year before his last work of fiction, ''Catalina'' (1948). In the preface to the First American edition of his ''Complete Short Stories'' (1952) Maugham said flatly that he had written his last short story. As always, he was as good as his word. In 1933 he said farewell to the stage and never wrote another play; in 1948 he announced his retirement from writing fiction and to the rest of his life he wrote only essays. Considering the level of excellence of Maugham's last works of fiction, I cannot but feel sorry that in the last 15 years or so from his career as a writer he did not write a single short story, let alone a novel. But then I reflect that Maugham was everything but stupid; he surely was a man who knew his own mind pretty well. If he had few illusions about his fellows, he had none about himself. He must have sensed that his creative powers were failing in the late 1940s, although I still can't sense that at all, to make such a grave decision. It is very much to his credit that he had the resolution to stop when he still was, to my mind completely, at the height of his creative powers.

I am often amazed not just by Maugham's longevity and productivity as a writer, but much more by his maintaining extraordinary high quality in his writing for more than quarter of a century. Speaking of short stories, ''Creatures of Circumstance'' was Maugham's eight short story collection published exactly 26 years after his first masterpiece in the genre, ''Trembling of a Leaf'' (1921). These eight volumes contain exactly 84 short stories written during quarter of a century or so; not even one of them is unreadable or tedious; the worst of them can be counted on the fingers of two hands and even they are not unpleasant to read. The great majority of Maugham's short stories I have never hesitated to describe as brilliant masterpieces; their superb character and plot development as well as their eminent readability, and especially the combination of all these factors, can occasionally be equalled by others but it is simply impossible to be surpassed. Of course the fifteen stories in ''Creatures of Circumstance'' are totally different in character than the ones written 20 years or so earlier but they are hardly weaker in any aspect. Now, I really do find this amazing.

''Creatures of Circumstance'' starts with a compelling preface which bears the charming title ''The Author Excuses Himself''. Maugham explains first that in the preface to his previous volume of short stories, The Mixture as Before (1940), he had written the line 'I shall not write many more [stories]' but the editor, thinking perhaps that Maugham had already written quite enough stories, dropped the 'm' and the line became 'I shall not write any more [stories]'. So he had had the intention of publishing another volume right back in 1940 and did not wish to mislead his readers deliberately by such a statement. He then mentions that some of the stories were written a long time ago but he preferred to leave them unchanged (somewhat misleading statement as we shall see presently) and that the rest were new. This is not quite true either since some of the stories (''Appearance and Reality'' and ''A Casual Affair'', for instance) were published in magazines as early as 1934 and Sanatorium appeared on the pages of ''Cosmopolitan'' in the end of 1938. Anyway, that is neither here nor there. Infinitely more important is the fact that there is a lot to enjoy here. The diversity of styles, settings and locations is that I at least find very much appealing.

Surprisingly, since in 1936 for the preface of ''Ah King'' in The Collected Edition Maugham said he had written his last so called ''exotic'' stories, ''Creatures of Circumstance'' contains one such story. ''Flotsam and Jetsam'' is a rather harrowing tale but compelling nonetheless. It reminds of Maugham's finest achievements about planters in the Far East who are slaves of their darkest and most sinister passions. Less violent but hardly less memorable passions are the protagonists also in two other short stories - the exquisite ''A Woman of Fifty'' and the heart-rending ''A Casual Affair'' in which, among other things, Maugham enjoys satirizing the upper classes of long passed times.

But Maugham's versatility is really something to marvel at. Along the aforementioned grim and lurid tales, there are a number of extremely amusing stories that can always make you laugh a good deal. The French or the English marital complications in ''Appearance and Reality'' and ''The Colonel's Lady'', respectively, or the unforgettable Miss Reid in ''Winter Cruise'' are a perfect way to relax. It should be mentioned that ''Winter Cruise'' is also a perfect example how Maugham could write amusing and enjoyable thing to read using the stupidest and most banal plot in the world.

The three ''Spanish'' stories certainly are worth mentioning too. ''The Romantic Young Lady'' is rather funny and ''The Point of Honour'', showing some quite perverse sides of Spain and the Spaniards, is rather serious and disturbing but both are absorbing. And ''The Mother'', quite lurid and shocking, is one of the very few examples when Maugham, who detested his early works, was more or less completely satisfied with something he had written almost 40 years ago. ''The Mother'' was first published in ''Storyteller Magazine'' in April 1909. This early version appeared in book form not earlier than 1958 in ''The Cassell Miscellany''. Maugham did revise the story for its inclusion in ''Creatures of Circumstance'' but only slightly; on the whole he seemed content to leave it as it was which is somewhat contradictory to what he says in his preface but, on the other hand, he might have meant some of the stories that were published in magazines in the 1930s, a decade or so before, and not ''The Mother''. It is interesting to note that Jonh Whitehead, in the preface to the priceless ''A Traveller In Romance, Uncollected Writings of W. Somerset Maugham, 1901-1964'' (1984), mentions something about an early version of ''The Point of Honour'' too but I have so far not been able to find anything whatsoever that such version was ever published or existed at all; oddly, John Whitehead hints that Maugham rewrote the piece later and that his claim in the preface of ''Creatures of Circumstance'' is inaccurate but he did not choose to reprint this putative early version of ''The Point of Honour'' although it does seem to fit his criteria.

The case with ''The Happy Couple'' is quite different however. The two versions of this short story are quite different indeed and they provide the real Maugham admirer with a fascinating opportunity to see how the great writer developed his style through the years. The early version was first published in ''Cassell's Magazine'' in May 1908 and the later one in Redbook in February 1943 - they are separated by 35 years. It is worth while seeing how Maugham managed to improve significantly so early a story of his which, even in its 1908 version, is by no means bad. First he changed the narrative from third to first person singular. Maugham wrote a great deal about the art of fiction and the writing from first person. He often used the method to a great effect, invariably telling the story from a standpoint of an observer, never through the eyes of the protagonist. This is a very effective way to win the reader's confidence and make him live the whole story together with the author. That is exactly what Maugham achieved in the later version of ''The Happy Couple'' too. Moreover, he introduced a new character, the judge Landon, who is completely missing in the early version, so the story gained one point of view more. When you add to all this the greatly superior writing style that Maugham had in the early 1940s in comparison with the somewhat crude one in 1900s, it is hardly surprising that the rewritten version of ''The Happy Couple'' was the one included in ''Creatures of Circumstance''.

''A Man from Glasgow'' and ''Sanatorium'' deserved to be mentioned simply because the latter is one of the greatest short stories Maugham ever wrote and the former is one of the worst. ''A Man from Glasgow'' certainly is the worst from all 15 stories in ''Creatures of Circumstance''. It is one of Maugham's stories about mysterious phenomena, something of a ghost story actually, but rather unsuccessful and far from his brilliant earlier treatments of similar subjects like ''Honolulu'' (1921), ''P. & O.'' (1926) and ''Lord Mountdrago'' (1940). As for ''Sanatorium'', it is the only short story that includes the charming spy and gentlemen Ashenden, except of course all stories in ''Ashenden, or the British Agent'' (1928). ''Sanatorium'', however, is the only one written separately and as a short story by design, quite unlike Ashenden which consists of 16 chapters that were later merged into 6 short stories. ''Sanatorium'' was actually based on Maugham's own experience while he was recovering from tuberculosis in a sanatorium in Scotland during the First World War. The story is brilliantly executed and extremely poignant.

The last three stories that close the book, and Maugham's career as a short story writer, are as perfect as it is possible in so imperfect a world.

''The Unconquered'' was first published in a magazine in 1943 and it is the only short story of Maugham set in France during the Second World War. It is a haunting drama about a German soldier who raped a French girl and the multiple, and quite unexpected, consequences of that. It also contains one of the most unexpected and horrifying finales of all Maugham's stories.

''The Kite'' and ''Episode'' are the only two short stories of all Maugham wrote in which the prison confidant Ned Preston appears. He is more or less the only thing they have in common. ''The Kite'' has a highly original plot but very convincingly done, unbelievable as it may seem at first glance. It is rather amusing to read but it is by no means superficial. Together with the facetious satire of the middle class prejudices, Maugham gives a great deal more about human nature with his usual acumen. ''Episode'' is a story about love and passion between two young things. It has one of the most unexpected and one of the most chilling ends I have ever read. Every time when I read the story, and I have read it at least five times, I gasp after the final sentence. Maugham's sixth sense for dramatic effect never failed him and I do not believe that there are many authors who can compel you so strongly to read them and to shock you so profoundly with a last sentence of exactly three words.

Even Maugham apologized for this pitifully poor collection
By John Fitzpatrick
Somerset Maugham recognized later in life that some of his work was so bad that he refused to allow it to be reissued.

He should have done the same with this abysmal collection of short stories, first published in 1947 when he was a long-established successful author, and hoped they would never see the light of day again.

He makes an insincere meu culpa in a short preface - "I owe my readers an apology for the publication of this volume" - but then tries to justify this kind of short story written for magazines that were popular in the early 20th century.

The titles alone are enough to warn the reader off - "The Romantic Young Lady", "Appearance and Reality", "Episode", "A Woman of Fifty" etc.

There are occasional bits of humor and the kind of acerbic approach we associate with Maugham e.g. the young German sailor who is ordered to make love to a frustrated middle aged Englishwoman or the French Senator who sets up his young mistress in an apartment and then allows her to marry her true love so he can then enjoy the thrill of having an "affair" with a married woman.

However, most of them are preposterous and trite with limp "so what" endings.

About the Author

Swami Nirmalananda, the none-too- noticed Sage of B.R. Hills, after quite some restlessness in his worldly life when young, sought and achieved eternal blessedness, wisdom and peace in the teachings of the most spiritual personalities of many different cultures around the world, his spiritual quest taking him all around the globe. Spiritual freedom, simplicity, sincerity, clarity of thought and mind, prayers and penance formed the guiding lights of his inner and outer self. In perfect freedom and beatification, he walked alone, protected and spiritually nourished by the Almighty.

Following an inner call, Swamiji, at the impressionable age of fourteen, made a deep study of the world's major religions. He was greatly influenced by the lives and teachings of Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, Thoreau, Tolstoy, Schweitzer and many others. Like Sankaracharya, Jesus and Buddha, he became a wandering monk, a 'Parivrajaka.' No place on earth was, to him, inaccessible, more especially when he was imbued with zeal and passion of spiritual conquest and outer renunciation. On his way to Europe, he visited all of West Asia, particularly Israel. In Jerusalem he met and discoursed with the Existentialist, Martin Buber. Buber reminded him of Jesus, both in looks and charisma.

Turkey, Russia, England, Europe, America, Canada, Japan, and South East Asia were the places where he searched for and found his own true unsullied reflection as God in the people and things around him. He travelled far and wide, but all his wanderings, like those of saints and prophets of the world's major religions, were the wanderings of a spiritually enlightened soul, searching for and discovering his own otherwise lost soul in the love and peace of Godliness.

Swamiji feels that his long, continuous and ardu

Review

“Grindon’s contribution to the romantic comedy film bibliography is a valuable addition to the limited number of similar scholarly endeavors, and it seems well-designed for classroom use—not just for teaching the particular films he discusses, but also for teaching methodology. The romantic comedy genre has rarely received the sort of academic recognition it deserves, but students, film scholars, romance scholars, and rom-com enthusiasts all over the world will find The Hollywood Romantic Comedya fine introduction to this culturally and politically significant film genre.” (Journal of Popular Romance Studies, 1 October 2012)

"Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals; general readers." (Choice, 1 September 2011)

From the Back Cover
Though rarely explored in analytical detail, the romantic comedy remains a stalwart contributor to Hollywood entertainment. This book offers a comprehensive history of the Hollywood romantic comedy film, from the coming of sound to the twenty-first century, examining the conventions of the genre and surveying the controversies arising from the critical responses to these films.

Hollywood's romantic comedies can be seen as a series of productions whose form and meaning change in response to conditions in the film industry, courtship culture, and society at large. This book provides an essential overview of the continuities within the genre as well as its historical evolution. A full analysis is provided of the range of romantic comedy conventions, including dramatic conflicts, characters, plots, settings, and the function of humor. In doing so, Leger Grindon develops a survey of historical cycles and clusters and builds a canon of key films from Hollywood's classical era right up to the present day, which are analyzed in detail in the second part of the book. Films analyzed include Trouble in Paradise, His Girl Friday, The Miracle of Morgan's Creek, Adam's Rib, Some Like It Hot, The Graduate, Annie Hall, When Harry Met Sally, There's Something About Mary, and Waitress.

About the Author
Leger Grindon is Professor of Film and Media Culture at Middlebury College, USA. He has written widely on film and is the author of Shadows on the Past: Studies in the Historical Fiction Film (1994) and Knockout: The Boxer and Boxing in American Cinema (2011).

The Global paperback is almost like the hardback.
By Laura Burrows
I got the global paperback version with the birds on it. It is mostly like US hardback edition except the questions in the back of the chapter is different. What I do is borrow a friends book, scan the questions with my phone, and then I'm all good to go with homework. If you can do that you'll save some money.

Not for the faint of heart
By Boyd Hone
This review is going to be much more vague than my other reviews, due to the nature of the subject: Aguirre in books and on film. But as the review centers in the Americas during the great conquests, allow me first to mention two absolutely fabulous must-read books on the subject, both by the same author, Buddy Levy, CONQUISTADOR, the story of Corts and Montezuma, and RIVER OF DARKNESS, about Pizarro, Orellana and the Amazon.
I've recently read AGUIRRE by Stephen Minta and THE WRATH OF GOD: LOPE DE AGUIRRE by Evan Balkan. Both are slight volumes, both excellent, both detail the adventures of this sadistic psychopath who in no way possessed the vision and intelligence of a Corts or a Pizarro, although both, like Aguirre, were surely sociopaths. (I have a slight preference for Balkan.) Herzog's film with Klaus Kinski, AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD, faithfully reconstructs the major incidents as found in both Minta and Balkan's books, with a hideous Kinski who physically represents, to a staggering degree, the real-life, equally hideous Aguirre (whose portrait has survived). For those interested in the `'real-life'' Kinski, I've read W.A. Harbinson's (2011) BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, the biography of Kinski and his equally famous daughter. He went from rags to riches, eventually living in mansions, eating off gold plates and owning dozens of Rolls Royces, Ferraris, et al, sexually assaulting literally anything with an orifice, one of his daughters even accusing him of abusing her from the age of 5. In truth, throughout the whole book, one can't find a single reason to justify the existence of this miserable human scum. Yet, compared to the inhumanity and sheer butchery of a Corts or, especially, a Pizarro, he comes off as merely a miscreant. The film and all of these books are not for the faint of heart. As for my own books (also not destined for the faint of heart), they can be found on Amazon under Michael Hone.

Beauty And The Beast
By Cecil Dee
This story of Nastassja and Klaus Kinski has long been overdue. Instead of a mere combination of biographies, W. A. Harbinson's Beauty And The Beast tells the story of the famous, or infamous, daughter and father and their wrought relationship. A riveting story of two fascinating personalities from the film world of, in the main, the 20th century, told here in a spellbinding fashion by a master storyteller.

Nastassja is perhaps the better known 'star' of this pair in the English-speaking film world, though today mainly remembered for her title role in Polanski's `Tess.' But make no mistake, Klaus Kinski was without doubt one of the greatest actors of the last century, in the English-speaking cinema world perhaps best known for his starring roles in Werner Herzog's epic movies such as Nosferatu; Aguirre, The Wrath of God; Woyzek; and Fitzcarraldo. The love-hate relationship between the two mad geniuses Kinski and Herzog incidentally also gets explored in some detail, as does that between Nastassja Kinski and Roman Polanski. In Germany, Kinski the father's status and reputation was legendary, both for his numerous, frequently highly controversial, stage performances as well as his appearances in more films than perhaps any other actor ever appeared in. However, Kinski's status was not based on quantity, rather, on his phenomenal presence and ability.

The story of father and daughter Kinski, as much renowned for their screen lives as notorious for their personal lives, and their strained relationship, is told in a totally gripping manner by Harbinson that makes one virtually break a sweat in anticipation of the next chapter.

Beauty And The Beast lays bare the relationship between father and daughter as it has not been done before. Given the characters involved, there is of course a fair amount of adult content and strong language, but both are wholly inevitable and essential to the story of the Kinskis. It is a story that is always compelling and even addictive.

For all true cinema fans, W. A. Harbinson's Beauty And The Beast has to be compulsive, even compulsory reading. An essential must have!

Unquiet Desperation
By Larry Rochelle
You have to give the Author Harbinson so much credit in making some sense out of these two out-of-control lives, the father Klaus Kinski and his daughter, Nastassja Kinski, in the book Beauty and the Beast.

1. Klaus Kinski remained almost beyond control in his real life, and his acting added another dimension pf absurd genius to his multi-layered personality.

2. Nastassja Kinski fought her whole life to become a personality that was stable, thoughtful and brilliant, and for the most part succeeded.

3. Roman Polanski explored the dark side in many of his films, and he was instrumental in warping Nastassja's childhood, almost more than her father did. At least she could avoid her father, but she never outgrew Polanski it seems.

4. How this talented and photogenic family could remain sane through all this turmoil, all these crazy sexual escapades, all of these angry and violent moments is really amazing. Of course, maybe Klaus was not completely sane.

Harbinson stays on track as he pieces together these crazy lives, and to him the reader must give applause. Emerson said, "Most men live lives of quiet desperation." That quotation might be true for most of us, but the Kinskis needed to share their desperation with loud and powerful anger, anguish, and angst.
