Diesel Mechanics is an excellent manual for understanding the function, design, trouble-shooting, and repairing of various diesel engines. From basic safety tips, to diagnostic tool usage, and the inner working of today's diesel engine, this manual is one of the best out there. With over 300 detailed illustrations to supplement a very readable and 'user friendly' text, this book is a both a great reference source and solid beginner's introduction to diesel engines. The text, itself, is very easy to understand. It avoids the double-trouble areas of oversimplification and excessive 'wordiness' that many diesel engine manuals fall prey to. Rather, the chapters are well designed and broken down for easier study and quick reference. They are also exceedingly well arranged for logical comprehension that takes the reader step-by-step through the process of first understanding the inner workings of diesel engines, and then the all important aspects of diagnostics and repair. This book is very detailed and easy to understand. My fianc� can now rebuild his f250 without cussing and yelling lol. This was our first rodeo with a diesel and this book has been a life saver. He did go to automotive schooling but they only covered regular gasoline engines. Thank you again for putting this out there for the public to use!

Why couldn't all his books have been like this?

Apparently Lewis didn't become disillusioned and embittered until after 1919, when this absolutely delightful book was published. We have an original copy that my mom got from a library sale or something. She loved it, I loved it, which is no suprise because I am a sucker for sweet old novels, but the most ringing endorsement it that my impossible-to-please dad loved it. In fact, he was the one who made me read it.
There really isn't a lot of substance to this book - it's mostly fluff. (There's some social commentary in the later parts of the book, when they're in Seattle, but I try to ignore it.) But it's grade-A, high-quality fluff we're talking about here. Claire Boltwood's transformation from a Brooklyn snob to a real woman is highly believable, and Milt Daggett is one of the sweetest, most wholesome men ever created. Set against the well-painted backdrop of the American West, the story shifts from amusing to heartwarming to bittersweet and back again flawlessly.
Just a good, simple love-story, unique and well-written. I would recommend this book to anyone just looking for a good read.

unpaved roads, flat tires and chasing that dream

Sinclair Lewis's FRESH AIR, published in 1919, is sheer, chuckling delight. It offers no great insights into psyches or interpersonal relations. Read it rather as a straightforward magazine serial pot boiler romance of frontier boy and car mechanic (Milt Daggett) pursuing a sentimental girl (Claire Boltwood) worth an impressive $5,000 around 1916. The girl, a high living Brooklynite, is driving her ailing workaholic father in a heavy Gomez-Dep roadster long day after weary day across northern plains and mountains towards a vacation with cousins in Seattle. She wonders whether she can ultimately avoid marrying Jeff Saxton, a notably older beau back in sophisticated New York.

Milt complicates things by falling in love with Claire after pulling her car out of a Minnesota mud hole created by a German hick to extort money from stranded motorists. Milt almost instantly decides to drive in his modest Teal "tin beetle" or "bug" with or near Claire and her father all the way to Seattle. And so it goes, with Claire wondering if she can (or should) civilize the manly Milt up to the level of suave and prosperous Jeff or whether that is too, too patronizing. Should she, alternatively, simply sweep off to Alaska with Milt -- heeding the call of the wild? Were Jane and Tarzan in the back of Sinclair Lewis's mind? For Edgar Rice Burroughs had created them only seven years earlier in 1912. No, the story takes another twist. Read the book and discover what this novel is said to be "prelude and curtain raiser" to.

FRESH AIR can also be read just for its sweaty heft as a part of midwestern and western America not long before the nation declared war on the Kaiser. On the drive through Minnesota, North Dakota, etc. to Washington state, roads are rarely paved. Gravel is luxury. Dust is daily. Mud is just around the bend. Tires are thin and frequently burst or are punctured. Steep slopes demand drivers with braking and gear shifting skills. And don't forget low spots covered by running water.

In every town where the Boltwoods overnight, they routinely drive their Gomez-Dep (a make apparently invented by Sinclair Lewis) into a sure-to-be-there full service garage for the night. These and other cross country garages often display a sign "Free Air," which must have been a reassuring come-on in the early days of cross-continental motoring.

The author, just one year before his first masterpiece, MAIN STREET, convincingly presents his personally experienced North American driving world from an expert mechanic's point of view: an automobile-crazed country with its starters, carburetors, rumble seats, dubiously effective head lamps, oil leaks, hitchhikers, fleabag hotels, country stores, a haunted house and country people who speak German and at first seem gruff but then are seen by sophisticated Easterner Claire Boltwood to have hearts of gold. As does her new suitor, Milt Daggett. It is an all-American world where even auto mechanics are romantic and knightly.

Boys and girls should read FRESH AIR a year or so before they tackle TOM SAWYER and HUCKLEBERRY FINN. One leads to the others.

Early, less profound Sinclair Lewis

One of my favorite books. I was lucky to get a copy (original edition) from the New York Public Library. Have read all his well-known books, but might like this best. His usual themes of Americana, social climbing, etc. But this is a "road" book and a very innocent love story - wonderful book by one of the best American writers. I'm surprised it's in print since it's such a minor title of his.

Best 1st semester Riemannian Geometry book after 1 semester DG

This is the best Riemannian Geometry book after students have finished a semester of differential geometry. It gives geometric intuition, has plenty of exercises and

is excellent preparation for more advanced books like Cheeger-Ebin.

Students should already know differential geometry (Spivak "Calculus on manifolds" and Spivak "Differential Geometry Volume I" might be used there)

Warning: the curvature tensor is defined backwards as compared to Cheeger-Ebin.

Excellent stepping stone to more advanced treatments

Though this text lacks a categorical flavor with commutative diagrams, pull-backs, etc. it is still at an intermediate to advanced level. Nevertheless, constructs are developed which are assumed in a categorical treatment. It does do Hopf-Rinow, Rauch Comparison, and the Morse Index Theorems which you would find in a text like Bishop-Crittendon. However, it does the Sphere Theorem, an advanced theorem dependent on the Morse Theory/calculus of variations methods in differential geometry. Even "energy" is treated which is the kinetic energy functional integral used to determine minimal geodesics, reminiscent of the Maupertuis Principle in mechanics.
The reader is assumed to be familiar with differentiable manifolds but a somewhat scant Chapter 0 is given which mostly collects results which will be needed later. The treatment is dominated by the "coordinate-free" approach so emphasis is on the tangent plane or space and properties intrinsic to the surface with only a brief section on tensor methods given. Realize the tangent space has the same dimension as the surface to which it is tangent and this can be greater than 2. If you remember from advanced calculus, you took the gradient of a function of n variables (the function maps to a constant as a sphere say does). The gradient defined the normal to the(n-1) dimensional tangent hyperplane to the surface. The surface is also (n-1) dimensional since given (n-1) values to the variables the nth value is determined by the function equation implicitly. Note in this construction we used the embedding in our interpretation, nevertheless this gradient/tangent hyperplane notion can be given an intrinsically defined method of getting the tangent space through the related notion of the directional derivative. Forging this to a linear tangent space is a key construct which the reader should grasp, one not available in Gauss's lifetime. The text by Boothby is more user-friendly here and is also available online as a free PDF. Boothby essentially covers the first five chapters of do Carmo (including Chapter 0) filling in many of the gaps.
Both in Boothby and do Carmo the affine connection makes appearance axiomatically and the covariant derivative results from imposed conditions in a theorem construct. If this is a bit hard to chew (it was for me) there are exercises 1 and 2 on pp. 56-57 of do Carmo in which you are to show how the affine connection and covariant derivative arise from parallel transport. Theorem 3.12 of Chapter VII in Boothby does this a bit too formally but you can find it in various forms on the web. In particular there is a nice one where the tangent planes are related along the curve over which the parallel transport or propagation occurs resulting in a differential equation which gives both the affine connection and the covariant derivative. Just Google "parallel transport and covariant derivative."
I have certain quibbles like in defining the Riemannian metric as a bilinear symmetric form,i.e., his notation is a bit dated here and there but the text shines from chapter 5 on. So 5 stars.
P.S. There's a PDF entitled "An Introduction to Riemannian Geometry" by Sigmundur Gudmundsson which is free and short and is tailor made for do Carmo assuming only advanced calculus as in say rigorous proof of inverse function theorem or the first nine (or ten) chapters of Rudin's Principles 3rd. It does assume some familiarity with differential geometry in R^3 as in do Carmo's earlier text but you can probably fill this in from the web if you're not familiar from past coursework as in vector analysis. Differential manifold and tangent space are clearly developed without the topological detours-pretty much if you're familiar with the derivative as a linear map (as in Rudin), you're at the right level. Also Lang's "Introduction to Differentiable Manifolds" is available as a free PDF if you want to see the categorical treatment after you get through do Carmo-can also be used for reference concurrently, example-isomorphic linear spaces?

:a full textbook of Riemannian geometry. it exists without linear difficulties that causes Euclidean geometry to eventually break down at points of movement.
:apparently the geometry that begins with an E and arrives from Greece is for the arrangement of numbers; thats why it looks at the sides of shapes. try and dont think its for music though.
:if youre looking for a full textbook of Riemannian geometry then look no further; and dont purchase the text by the name of Riemannian Geometry As A Field Over Another Geometry; that text is a doctoral thesis which has little or no connection to the desirable full textbook for sale on the site.
